Give Tax Effectively: UK Gift Aid

Donations to charity from individuals are tax-free.

You can get tax relief if you donate in the following ways:

  • Through Gift Aid
  • Straight from your wages or pension, through Payroll Giving
  • Leave charitable donations in your will (reduce inheritance tax)
  • King's Ely is HMRC Registered and can claim back the tax already paid on your donation.
Gift Aid

Donating through Gift Aid means charities and community amateur sports clubs (CASCs) can claim an extra 25p for every £1 you give. It does not cost you any extra.

As long as you are a UK taxpayer and sign a Gift Aid declaration, King's Ely is able to reclaim basic rate tax, which currently equates to 25p for every £1 donated.

If you pay tax above the 20% basic rate, you can claim back the difference between the tax you have paid on the donation and what the charity got back when you fill in your self-assessment tax return.

For example, if you donate £10,000 to King's Ely and complete a Gift Aid form, King's Ely can claim Gift Aid to make your donation £12,500. If you pay 40% tax, you can personally claim back £2,500.

Gifts from Abroad

The British Schools & Universities Foundation (BSUF)

The British Schools & Universities Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, tax-exempt organisation that supports school and university fundraising across the Commonwealth through tax-efficient giving in the United States.

Old Eleans, parents and friends of King’s Ely who are resident in the USA can support the school by making tax-deductible gifts, subject to the advice of their tax or financial adviser, to BSUF with a preference that the grant be made to King’s Ely.

BSUF will inform King’s Ely of all gifts made with a preference for the school (including the amount), enabling us to acknowledge your generosity. Grants are distributed by BSUF to approved institutions on a quarterly basis.

To make a gift, please visit the BSUF website, naming King’s Ely as the approved institution and indicating your preferred area of support. While donor preferences are respected, all grants are made at the sole discretion of BSUF, in accordance with US Internal Revenue Service requirements.
