A Level Further Mathematics

Students are able to opt for Further Mathematics in addition to A Level Mathematic.

 

Further Mathematics is designed to stretch and challenge able mathematicians and prepare them for university courses in mathematics and related quantitative and scientific subjects.

The course is very flexible and usually consists of more pure and applied mathematics units. This course will extend and deepen a students knowledge of proof, algebra, functions, calculus and vectors studied in Mathematics.

It will also broaden a students knowledge into other areas of pure mathematics that underpin the further study of mathematics and other numerate subjects with complex numbers and matrices.

Laerners will also study differential equations, polar coordinates and hyperbolic functions.

Students wanting to do a degree in Mathematics, Engineering, Natural Sciences or Economics can gain from A Level in Further Mathematics.

Prerequisite

Minimum GCSE Maths grade 8 or equivalent.
Topic Overview

 

You will be introduced to the world of imaginary and Complex numbers.

In Further Mathematics, there is still a lot of Pure mathematics content, making up at least 30% of the AS level and at least 50% of the A level.

Besides complex numbers, you will also be introduced to matrices. Matrices can be used to solve sets of simultaneous equations, to represent transformations and are used a lot in the digital world.

The remainder of the content is made up of options which will include some of: Additional pure Mathematics Additional statistics and/or mechanics or another type of applied maths Discrete / Decision Mathematics.
Assessment

 

The Pearson Edexcel Level 3 Advanced GCE in Further Mathematics consists of four externally-examined papers.

Students must take Paper 1 and Paper 2, the two mandatory Core Pure papers, and two optional papers.

Students are permitted to take more than the two optional papers if they want to extend their course of study.

Paper 1: Core Pure Mathematics 1
Paper 2: Core Pure Mathematics 2

Each paper is:

  • 1 hour and 30 minutes written examination
  • 25% of the qualification
  • 75 marks

Assessment overview
  • Paper 1 and Paper 2 may contain questions on any topics from there Pure Mathematics content.
  • Students must answer all questions.
  • Calculators can be used in the assessment. 
Further Mathematics Optional Papers

Each paper is:

  • 1 hour and 30 minutes written examination
  • 25% of the qualification
  • 75 marks

Students take two options from the following eight:

Option 1 Papers 

  • 3A: Further Pure Mathematics 1
  • 3B: Further Statistics 1
  • 3C: Further Mechanics 1
  • 3D: Decision Mathematics 1

Option 2 Papers

  • 4A: Further Pure Mathematics 2
  • 4B: Further Statistics 2
  • 4C: Further Mechanics 2
  • 4D: Decision Mathematics 2 

There are restrictions on which papers can be taken together.

Students choose a pair of options, either:

  • any two Option 1 papers, or
  • a matching pair of Option 1 and Option 2 papers

This makes a total of ten different option pairs.
