Senior Pastoral Care

Pastoral Care

We support each student, celebrating their achievements and helping them through the inevitable problems that arise in adolescence.

Pastoral care at King’s Ely Senior underpins all we do.

"The pastoral support at King’s has been exceptional, easing our family into the independent school community. The dedicated staff have ensured that our boys feel not only academically supported but also emotionally nurtured."
Mr and Mrs Niezgoda

At King’s Ely Senior, we provide supportive pastoral care that enables young people to discover and build on their strengths, using their talents to help define their identity.

Students are encouraged to nurture the habit of independent learning and take ownership of their own educational journeys, developing a sense of who they are alongside the courage to be who they want to be.

We offer a counselling service which is c-ordinated by the Community Welfare Advisor. They work with a team of BACP qualified counsellors. All pupils may access counselling, of which the first six sessions are free of charge each academic year.  The school counsellors aim to provide a specialised, professional layer of support, complementing the pastoral support offered by Tutors, teachers, housemasters, and housemistresses.

Tutoring

The tutorial system provides structure and continuity. Students have a Year 9 tutor for one year, then a tutor to take them through GCSEs that remains the same for Year 10 and 11. This relationship is invaluable for the effective support of each student in academic work, revision and subject selection at GCSE and A Level and is built up through regular group meetings and individual tutorials.

As part of the role, tutors deliver the PSHE program which covers the three areas set by the PSHE association:

  • -    Health and Wellbeing
  • -    Relationships
  • -    Life in the wider world

The program aims to inform students in all areas and equip them with sound decision making skills for life choices. The program runs through all year groups in senior school including Sixth Form and is supplemented by various guest speakers throughout the year.

House System

The House system at King’s Ely is central to the life of every student. From the start, students develop a strong allegiance to their House; it’s a place to make friends, a base between lessons and the hub of House competition, whether it be debating, sport, music, or outdoor pursuits.

All students are allocated to one of nine day boarding Houses. Houses take responsibility for leading worship in the cathedral, fund-raising for charity and organising social events. This allows everyone the opportunity to experience the fun and the challenge of working as a team and engaging with students in all year groups, including Sith Form.
