"Our son, James, joined King’s Ely Senior in Year 9 in 2020, and it was the best decision that we could have made for him.
"James attended a Prep School in Cambridge until Year 8, and we considered a range of Senior Schools for him. King’s Ely stood out for us for being so well-rounded, with such a welcoming, family and community feel.
"Our biggest concern about James starting at King’s was navigating the train to school, but we needn’t have worried! James has loved the independence of catching the train to and from Cambridge with his friends every day, and is quite the expert on rail timetables.
“James has been so happy throughout his time at the school, throwing himself into a wide variety of opportunities and making many friends. The staff are so supportive, both academically and pastorally, and it was an easy decision for James to stay at King's for Sixth Form. James was diagnosed with dyslexia after his GCSEs and the school have been outstanding in their one-to-one support for him during his A-Levels. He is thriving in his chosen subjects and is currently holding five University offers.
"A major highlight for James during his time at King's has been the incredible Music provision. James plays the trumpet and has been involved in Concert Band, Brass Ensemble, and Jazz Band since Year 9. Now in Year 13, he was very proud to be awarded the role of Head of Concert Band at the start of the year. The range of concerts he has been involved in over the years, including outdoor music festivals, Christmas carol events in the Cathedral, and a ‘speakeasy’ evening, have all been performed to such a high standard. For us as his parents, the honour of hearing him play the Last Post in Ely Cathedral on Remembrance Day will stay with us forever.
"Another highlight for James has been his involvement in the Ely Scheme, which we believe is unique among the Cambridgeshire schools. He very much enjoyed his time participating in this outdoor education scheme in his first couple of years, and was then successfully appointed as an Instructor in Year 11. Such is his dedication to the scheme that he has now risen to Head Pupil Instructor in Year 13, a role which has helped him to develop a range of impressive leadership skills.
"One of the benefits of a King’s education for James has been the confidence it has given him. The school places such a strong emphasis on its values and there are so many opportunities to develop skills beyond the curriculum. James has loved the House system at King’s, getting involved in many fun activities over the years, and enjoying the rivalry with the other Houses! As a House Prefect, as well as a School Prefect, he has been given the opportunity to build his confidence and further demonstrate his leadership skills.
"We would not hesitate to fulsomely recommend the school to anyone – and often do!"
